SANDFEST - WOW!

Sandfest, the annual Sand Sculptor contest, drew 100,000 visitors to the island. The professional sculptors began their masterful handiwork Friday morning, and judging was done Sunday. There were also amateur and children’s competitions as well as a learning mountain. And, of course, there were many craft and food booths to enjoy. It is one of the most popular events held in Port A, and, by all accounts, eveyone had a wonderful time.

Spring Break - A Family Success

Spring Break 2008 was a new kind of success here in Port Aransas. For various reasons, the numbers of young people were down, and the number of families was up, way up. Most of the condos and many of the hotels were very restrictive with regard to groups of young people with no parental control, and the police put some new ordinances in place to control drinking on the beach. Almost everyone agreed that it was a pleasant change, and many families said they would return because of the lack of loudness and partying that has been a part of Spring Break in the past.

The annual Sandfest is scheduled for the weekend of April 18th. Professional sand sculptors come from all over the world to compete, and the beach is filled with families who enjoy watching these wonders being created. It is one of the most popular events on the island and is fun for all ages.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Port Aransas is a small island paradise, but it never lacks in enthusiasm when it comes to celebrating major events, minor events or even no events. On St. Patrick’s Day, three truckloads of Irish and beer-loving locals and visitors traveled from bar to bar spreading the loving of the Irish and the wearing of the green. Crowds gathered along the route to cheer them on.

Relay for Life

Port Aransas Community Theater

Port Aransas is known for its gorgeous beaches, great fishing and wonderful food. However, many people do not know that there is a terrific community theater on the island as well. The members of our local theater group work very hard to present first-rate productions throughout the year, and spending an evening in the newly-completed theater is just another way for the entire family to enjoy their visit to the island.

CELEBRATION OF WHOOPING CRANES

One of the most popular events in Port Aransas is the Whooping Cranes Festival which will be held February 21st - 24th. Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers come from all over the country every year to observe the endangered Cranes and many other species of birds. There are guided tours by land and sea, and one never tires of watching these gorgeous creatures.

WINTER TEXAN BON VOYAGE PARTY

Port Aransas is the Winter home of many of our northern neighbors who want to escape their harsh winter weather.

On Thursday, February 28th, Plantation Suites is holding a Bon Voyage party, and all of the Winter Texans on the island are cordially invited. There will be a free buffet and door prizes, tours of the property, and entertainment will be provided by one of the island’s favorite bands, the Medicare Band. This is the second year the party has been held, and last year the turnout was enormous. We look forward to an equally as large a turnout this year.
